Residence — make a good home

Your home is where you sleep, recover, host, and repair. Keep it in order, learn the skills that end helplessness, add beauty, and welcome people.

A residence is more than the place where you store your possessions.

It is the physical center of your life.

It is where you sleep, recover, eat, think, host, repair, celebrate, and spend time with the people closest to you.

A gentleman should know how to make a good home.

Keep it in order

A perfect house is unnecessary.

A neglected one eventually becomes unpleasant.

Clean things.

Put things away.

Repair what breaks.

Change filters.

Maintain appliances.

Know where the water shutoff is.

Own basic tools and know how to use them.

Learn the difference between a job you can reasonably handle yourself and one that requires a professional.

Care is visible in maintenance.

The goal is not obsessive neatness. It is creating a place where daily life works.

Learn domestic skills

A capable man should know how to feed himself and other people.

Learn to cook several good meals.

Know how to do laundry properly.

Sew on a button.

Clean a bathroom.

Iron a shirt when necessary.

Set a table.

Host guests.

Make coffee.

None of these things diminish masculinity.

They reduce helplessness.

A gentleman should be able to live alone without living badly.

Create beauty

A home should contain something beyond utility.

Books.

Plants.

Art.

Photographs.

Good lighting.

Music.

Furniture you enjoy.

Objects with stories.

Beauty matters because human beings live better in places that feel cared for.

This does not require luxury.

A small apartment can be thoughtful, warm, and welcoming.

A mansion can feel sterile.

The difference is attention.

Make people welcome

Hospitality is one of civilization’s oldest practices.

Invite people in.

Feed them.

Offer them something to drink.

Make sure they are comfortable.

Do not spend the evening apologizing for every imperfection in your home.

Hospitality is not performance.

It is the practice of making another person feel that their presence is welcome.

Friends become closer around tables.

Families develop traditions in kitchens and living rooms.

Communities often begin with somebody saying, “Come over.”

Build a place you want to return to

Home should provide restoration.

The world outside can be loud, demanding, and chaotic.

Your residence should help you settle.

That might mean a chair where you read, a workshop in the garage, a garden, a clean kitchen, a quiet bedroom, or simply an uncluttered desk.

Build spaces that support the person you want to be.

Go do things

Repair one thing you have been ignoring.

Learn one household skill you currently lack.

Cook dinner for someone.

Remove ten things you no longer need.

Add one thing of beauty.

Then ask:

Does my home support the life I am trying to build?

A gentleman does not merely occupy a residence.

He makes a home.
